Mobile Labs, an Atlanta-based provider of enterprise-grade application testing solutions, recently released some tips for retailers that use mobile apps to sell their wares during the holiday season.
Now that people are increasingly using their mobile devices to shop, retailers must be prepared to handle higher access volumes during the holidays. Mobile Labs advises retailers to do frequent load tests on their applications to ensure that users are actually able to gain access during periods of high traffic.
Another issue that retailers must be prepared to address is the influx of new device users and first-time mobile shoppers who may not be skilled at navigating retail applications. For this reason, it’s important that retailers ensure their apps are not only innovative, but easy to use.
Since device manufacturers are more likely to release new smartphones and tablets close to the holidays, retailers should make sure they can quickly test whether or not their apps will work on all versions of devices and operating systems. This will prevent retailers from losing business to competitors whose apps do work on newer devices.
Finally, when updating apps to accommodate newer operating systems, retailers should make sure they remain available to existing operating systems are well. Many people still use older operating systems and it would be wise to ensure they can still access the applications.
“Retailers’ mobile strategies will be put to the test this holiday season,” said Don Addington, president and CEO, Mobile Labs. “Consumers are using a wider variety of mobile devices than ever before, supported by an exponentially longer list of operating system versions. How vigorously they’ve tested their m-commerce applications will have a direct impact on the success of their m-commerce initiatives.”
