Software-designed storage users can now receive help with their virtual environments thanks to HP’s release of HP Converged Storage. It gives customers the option to maximize the ROI of their virtual infrastructure. The release includes two new products that will benefit HP customers, including HP StoreVirtual and plug-ins for HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage.
According to David Scott, senior vice president and general manager of Storage at HP, budget-conscious organizations are turning to software-designed storage to reduce data center investment and operational costs. “Having pioneered software-defined storage with an installed base of over 170,000 StoreVirtual VSA licenses, HP is now extending its leadership in this area with auto-tiering capability to further optimize cost and performance for small or medium-sized businesses as well as remote enterprise branches,” he said.
The HP StoreVirtual Virtual Storage Appliance (VSA) software functionality includes a sub-LUN (logical unit number) storage tiering and increased VMware and Microsoft Integration. With this, HP introduces new licensing options to make the deployment of the StoreVirtual VSA more flexible. In addition to the 10-terabyte (TB) standard license, the company now offers a 4TB license for small sites and a 50TB high-capacity license. As a result, customers can start small and upgrade to a larger VSA or the HP StoreVirtual 4000 appliance as needed.
HP StoreVirtual VSA is powered by HP’s LeftHand operating system with the new Adaptive Optimization to offer customers data tiering in their software-designed storage solution. Data tiering moves data blocks to high-performance or cost-optimized storage automatically based on application needs. In order to reduce costs, HP Adaptive Optimization moves actively used data to faster storage areas (such as SSDs) and inactive data to more cost-effective areas, such as HDD storage.
In addition to increased speed and scalability, StoreVirtual VSA supports VMware ParaVirtualized SCSI Controller and uses Microsoft Windows® Server with Hyper-V integration makes a CPU run more efficiently.
The HP 3PAR StoreServ with the HP StoreFront Analytics Pack is compatible with solutions from independent software vendors to enable VMware administrators to efficiently and cost-effectively monitor and troubleshoot complex virtualized environments. The StoreFront Analytics Pack relays real-time data on the health and performance of the 3PAR StoreServ Storage to IT professionals.
One of the plug-ins for the 3PAR StoreServ Storage integrates StoreServ with HP XP P9500 Storage with SAP NetWeaver® Landscape Virtualization Management 1.0. The plug-in is supported in Microsoft Windows, Linux and HP-UX environments, and includes automation capabilities that reduce time to clone SAP applications and reduce the overall system copy and refresh time.
HP and its authorized channel partners will be offering the plug-ins by August 19, StoreVirtual VSA by September 30, and StoreFront Analytics Pack for VMware vCenter Operations Manager by the end of 2013.
